Engines
The W201 featured a range of petrol (M102 series) and diesel (OM601, OM602 series) engines. Petrol engines ranged from the 1.8L to the 2.6L inline-6, and the specialized Cosworth 16-valve units. Diesel engines were renowned for their longevity and efficiency.
Key engine series included the M102 (4-cylinder petrol), M103 (6-cylinder petrol in 190E 2.6), OM601 (4-cylinder diesel), and OM602 (5-cylinder diesel).

Chassis & Suspension
Perhaps the W201's most significant innovation was its patented multi-link independent rear suspension. This complex design offered superior handling, stability, and ride comfort, setting new benchmarks for compact cars. The front suspension utilized MacPherson struts with anti-dive geometry. Power steering was standard or available on most models.
Safety Features
For its time, the W201 incorporated advanced safety features. These included a rigid passenger cell, crumple zones, anti-lock braking system (ABS) as standard or optional depending on model/year, and an offset frontal crash protection design. Airbags became available later in its production run.
Innovations for its Era
- Multi-link rear suspension.
- Aerodynamically efficient design (Cd values as low as 0.32 for some models).
- Extensive use of high-strength, low-alloy steel.
- Introduction of advanced safety concepts to the compact class.
- Single wiper with eccentric sweep for improved coverage.
